What makes a house a home? Is it the furniture? The aroma? The small chip in the wood floor and dent on the fridge? The memories we make in that space? The people within it? A house is to a home as a school is to a community. Community is a sense of belonging to a deeper humanity, and it’s what we aspire to at Canyon View High School this upcoming school year.
This year Canyon View is endowed with an incredibly welcoming and hard working student council. These friendly faces include our Student Body President, Mckinlee Urie; our Student Body Vice President, Tristan Martinez; our Student Body Secretary, Emma Rigby; our Artisan, Regan Miller; our Fine Arts Representative, Elsie Call; our Service Representative, Talmage Greener; our Sports Representative, Hutson Slack; our Spirit Representative, Greg Mcallister; our Mascot, Hallie Shumway; our technician, Tyler Lewis; our Publisher Chair, Shelby Zobell; our Media Chair; Julianne Porter; our historian, me, Kayleah Madsen; our Senior Class President, Presley Miller; our Senior Class Vice President, Anna Barton; our Senior Class Secretary, Kaidence Hazard; our Senior Activity Chair, Karver Mock, our Junior Class President, Averi Pace; our Junior Vice President, Jocelyn Aronold; our Junior Class Secretary, Jaci Maccinis; our Junior Activity Chair, Rachel Arnold; our Sophomore President, Derek Belnap; our Sophomore Class Vice President, Gabe Torgerson; our Sophomore Secretary, Seth Morris; our Sophomore Activity Chair, Addy Young; our Freshman Class President, Michael Davis; our Freshman Class Vice President, Brook Barney; and our Freshman Class Secretary, Paislee Barlow. This incredible team is already super busy planning for upcoming events such as homecoming, welcoming freshmen, supporting our classmates at sporting events, and finding creative ways to stimulate engagement amongst the student body, whether it be through assemblies, club rushes, or just a friendly hello.

However, there is nothing quite like hometown rivalry to drum up engagement and support from the student body and the community. Last week Cedar High and Canyon View faced off in volleyball, tennis and football. The enthusiasm in the stands was outstanding! Unfortunately, it was not Canyon View’s most glorious week of all time, seeing as we lost on all fronts. Even so, we are not discouraged. Football has had a great start to their season, winning their first two games, volleyball has won the majority of their games so far, and tennis is just warming up their rackets. The only place we have left to go is up; our only job is to continue to support our athletes in both times of success and failure.

In other news, theater auditions were recently held for the fall musical of Tuck Everlasting. Congratulations to all of those who were cast in the show as leads, ensemble members, and everyone in between . They are now in the thick of it, rehearsing 10 hours a week, not to mention the character study and work they are putting into the show on their own time. It is a huge commitment, but not one without reward, and I personally can’t wait to see the pay off. Meanwhile, the marching band and color guard are out on the grass practicing every morning after school for the Labor Day Parade.
The chaos of the beginning of the school year may be overwhelming, but it is also exhilarating. I encourage you to help support the students alongside Canyon View High School’s student government to create a stronger sense of pride and community in our school, because we don’t want school to be just a house, we want it to feel like home.
