In 2020, Donald Trump Proposed banning the well known app TikTok in the U.S. The app’s parent companies and the U.S Government and its agencies have had many legal disputes regarding rights, privacy. This led to the ban being put in place for January 19nth 2025. Once the date of the ban was reached, the app and other apps that use Tiktok were unable to be accessed. This led to TikTok users migrating to other apps, but not for too long. Trump stated he would lift the ban, and after his inauguration, it was lifted. Leaving only a 12 hour period of TikTok being Banned
TikTok is a huge piece of the new generation culture, it is used by over a billion users worldwide, and serves as a career choice for many. It has and will continue to change our culture. While I understand that it has a large impact on our society today, I know that the impact is not necessarily all good. Doom Scrolling has come with the emergence of TikTok, and has been scientifically proven to have negative impacts on the users attention span. Self Deprecation from comparing other peoples looks and living statuses and hatefulness has come with it too, along with a variety of hateful content.
I respect TikTok for being a part of the new generation’s culture. It serves as a great way to share community and personnel experiences and arts. But I think it is improperly handled by its parent company and users, and should go through a slightly stricter set of rules and methodology.
