In the 2023-2024 year Mrs. Rigby decided to offer a class for Seniors to replace their fourth year of English. This class focuses on creative writing. In this class, students learn and master all the necessary skills to become an eloquent writer.
During the first quarter, students learned about memoirs and wrote several short pieces. These pieces were compiled into one work that students were able to take home. Then, for the second quarter, students learned about plot structure and drafted the first chapter of their novel. Now, their focus is journalism. During the third quarter, the students have the exciting role of setting up a school blog.
The class met this idea with clear excitement. The blog will cover a wide range of topics, including sports, clubs, the arts, local events, editorials and much more. Mrs. Rigby determined that there would be an Editor in Chief and editors for the different subcategories the blog intends to cover. Individual students volunteered for the various positions and a vote was held.
Emily Templin—also known as “Appositive” by the class—was elected as Editor in Chief. She is passionate about writing and loves English. She’s excited for the opportunity to help create this blog. Templin also expressed that she is looking forward to working with the other editors; there are some talented individuals in the class.
Odin Beam, Arts Editor, and Brenna Haley, Sports Editor, are well suited for their positions. Beam is a talented artist and writer, and Haley is a skilled competitor on the CVHS swim team. Their clear expertise will be displayed in their work.
Zoe Jones and Taliyah Russell have the dual responsibility of being Clubs Editors. Russell speaks highly of all the clubs she’s joined, explaining that they’ve always been inclusive and welcoming. Jones brings a different perspective to the role of Clubs Editor because she’s new to clubs at CVHS and will be able to provide a look from someone unfamiliar with how the clubs operate.
Mason Ames has the position of Local Events Editor and will ensure that CVHS students are aware of any opportunities and events happening outside of CVHS. Involved in theater and choir, Ames is a sociable individual and good friends with many CVHS students.
Zoey Hunt will be in charge of managing the Editorials. She will ensure that the student opinion pieces are of high quality and enjoyable to read.
The blog will also feature comic strips, crossword puzzles, and other fun activities. Dannan Ross and Akima Holdeman are the Fun Editors and are in charge of producing these comics and puzzles for the newspaper.
Finally, Jessica Berry is the Public Relations (PR) Editor. Her role is to advertise the blog, so the writers can receive the recognition they deserve and the students at CVHS can be well-informed.
The students are looking forward to this opportunity and are meeting the challenge head on. Each student is aiming to write at least one article each week. Hopefully, the students will develop a “nose for journalism” as Mrs. Rigby likes to say.
