Principal, Dennis Heaton, spoke to seniors at Canyon View about his service to our country as well as those from his immediate family. In a touching tribute, Heaton shared personal memories of his dear friend and fellow soldier, Army Sgt. 1st Class Ronald T. Wood. Wood, a former member of the 2-222nd Field Artillery Unit, died in the service to his country on July 16, 2005, as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom while serving in the 1-148th

Student Body Historian, Booklyn Rushton, welcomed her fellow classmates, Spirit leader, Brock Belnap led the students in the pledge of allegiance, and Senior Class officer, Katelyn Pace sang the National Anthem to open the program. Students reflected on the humble beginnings of our country as the flag was raised.

Cedar City Police Officer and local serviceman, SRO Eric Heaps also known as commander of HHB 2/222 FA, concluded the event by demonstrating to those in attendance how an American Flag should be properly retired when it can no longer be displayed in a dignified manner. The students proudly looked on while witnessing this patriotic event. As flags were retired, students had the opportunity to reflect upon the constant building of our country and the constant sacrifice. The Falcons at CVHS gained a better appreciation for those who have fought for our nation's freedom.

CVHS Student Government Officers, Staff, Administration, and Student Body would like to extend our gratitude to the heroes that live amongst us. Iron County is proud to house some of the most incredible unsung heroes from the ranks.
